Growing Orchids Under Lights

In his talk “Growing Orchids Under Lights”, Ken will explain the different types of lights that can be used for growing orchids. He will talk about the light spectra that plants need for best growth and blooming. He will then talk about which lights are the most efficient at providing the light plants need. He will also discuss issues of heating and cooling, humidity, watering and other factors that are encountered when growing orchids under lights.
About the Instructor:
Ken Wilson started growing orchids 30 years ago in New Jersey. He has been a member of Deep Cut Orchid Society in Central New Jersey and has helped manage greenhouses that produced award-winning orchids. Ken specializes in Paphiopedilums and more recently Phragmipediums. He rents space for his larger plants at Fantasy Orchids and grows seedlings from flask in a small grow room at home, primarily under lights. He has been experimenting with T5 fluorescents and LED lights to see which grow seedlings the fastest.
Ken has is an electrical engineer who worked for Bell Labs for 18 years and for the past 15 years has had his own consulting business. He currently works on renewable energy and energy efficiency for a non-profit in Boulder.
