Pergolas: An Attractive and Practical Addition to Any Landscape

This workshop offers students a comprehensive glimpse into the world of pergolas. Topics explored will include the advantages and popularity of pergolas and incorporating them into your landscape design. The primary focus of this course however, is the construction aspect including the conventional bolted approach and the presenters specialty, timber framing. In this presentation, we will discuss costs, designs, wood species, and learn about the traditional tools and techniques used in the timber framing tradition.

Chris Drake: Chris studied civil engineering and construction management as an undergraduate at CSU, as well as structural engineering as a grad student at the University of Minnesota. After earning his Masters Degree in 2004, he worked building log homes in Western Colorado before joining a structural engineering firm Denver and earning his Professional Engineering License in 2008. Since that time, Chris has attended multiple courses at Rocky Mountain Workshops and completed the Heartwood Apprenticeship. He recently became the first graduate of the Timber Framers Guild Apprenticeship Program while working for Frameworks Timber in Fort Collins, CO. Currently, Chris serves on the Timber Framers Guild Apprenticeship Training Committee and enjoys any opportunity to help others learn how to build well.
Peter Haney: Peter has been a builder and woodworker for over thirty years. The founder and workshop organizer of Rocky Mountain Workshops, he has traveled the world organizing building workshops and bicycle tours. Peter is experienced in both timber framing and log building. A Colorado native, Peter lives and works in Fort Collins.
Chris Kates: Chris has a degree in Construction Management from Southern Illinois and a tireless work ethic. After graduating in 2001, he attended one of the few timber frame apprenticeship programs in the country and has been building timber frames ever since. Chris was the first ever employee of Frameworks Timber where he now oversees the staff and production schedule for the entire timber frame shop.
