Vermicompost for a Healthy Garden

***Due to an unfortunate circumstance, instructor Betsy Lynch will not be available for our Vemicompost class from 1-3 p.m. tomorrow (Feb. 26). Betsy’s colleague, Kathy Doesken will be filling in for her. Kathy is an avid vermicultuarist and soil scientist. Call 482-1984 for questions, or if you’d prefer a refund.***

This program will cover the basics of using worms to convert kitchen scraps, garden wastes, and other organic residues into a rich, natural soil amendment. Learn about the worms best suited to composting; how to set up and “troubleshoot” both indoor and outdoor systems to encourage healthy, productive populations; and how to get the greatest benefit from using worm castings. Betsy will discuss how vermicompost differs from regular “compost” and review some of the latest research on how worm castings work in the soil to improve germination rates and promote disease resistance. After this class, you will have the knowledge and reference materials to help get started vermicomposting at home.

Betsy Lynch is co-owner of Good Earth Worms, LLC, which specializes in vermicomposting to produce high quality organic soil amendments for environmentally conscious growers. She holds a B.S. from Colorado State University’s College of Agriculture. Betsy is a member of the U.S. Composting Council, attended the Tenth Annual North Carolina State University Vermiculture and Vermicomposting Conference in 2010, and has continuing education in soil science through Front Range Community College.

Winter Workshops are held at Fort Collins Nursery, 2121 E. Mulberry St.
