The Best Hardy Bulbs for Front Range Gardens: Mid-Season and Late Bulbs (Rescheduled from Feb. 12)

Bulbs ― plants with underground storage organs ― are nature’s escape artists. When the going gets rough, they hide out and wait for better conditions to return. With its extremes, our region is ideally suited to bulbs. Many have evolved in similar conditions ― hot summers, cold winters, periodic drought, soils low in organic matter. Hardy, well-adapted bulbs are also a gardener’s best deal. Few plants give back so much for so little. For little money and effort, they come back year after year, often increasing all the while. The challenge lies in how to best show them off when they are in bloom and hide their absence later on. Lauren will discuss a host of dependable hardy bulbs and show examples of how to integrate them in the garden. In the afternoon session she will cover mid-season and late blooming bulbs.
Lauren Springer Ogden is a bulbaholic. In the past 22 years in northern Colorado, she has made three renowned home gardens, designed the pioneering Watersmart Garden at Denver Botanic Gardens, and written four books. The first, best-selling out-of-print The Undaunted Garden, is due out in a new, updated, and expanded edition and will be available for sale and signing at the workshops. Lauren’s present Fort Collins garden is home to over 30,000 bulbs. She estimates that between her time working as a professional gardener and designer and in her home gardens, she has personally planted well over 150,000 bulbs. She also has carpal tunnel syndrome, no doubt related to this addiction.
