SUMMARY:Houseplant Care
DESCRIPTION:Course Description: \nDoes houseplant care all seem like guesswork? It can if you don’t get to know your plants\, but there’s really no mystery to keeping house plants healthy\, and there’s no such thing as a brown thumb\, only a lack of know-how.  Most houseplants are simply plants that once grew and thrived in tropical climates and/or in greenhouses.  The “secret” to success with taking care of houseplants is to attempt to recreate the same ideal conditions as they would enjoy in their native habitat. Unlike their ancestors in the wild\, house plants are completely dependent on you for their care. \nThis class will cover houseplant basics like indoor plant lighting\, watering\, humidity\, fertilizing\, nutrition\, grooming\, diseases\, pests\, repotting\, and orchid care. \nPresented by Randy Meyer: \nRandy Meyer\, founder of Tropiflora\, has had a lifelong love affair with plants. He enjoys sharing his knowledge and passion with clients and helping them bring the benefits of the natural world indoors. Randy studied horticulture and floriculture (flowering and ornamental crops) at the University of Wisconsin. After college\, Randy moved to Portland\, Oregon and worked for a wholesale grower of tropical plants\, an interior plantscaping company\, and was the head gardener for a thirteen-acre botanical garden.  His interest in tropical plants eventually drew him to Hawaii where he worked with the native flora as caretaker for a three-acre property. \nRandy and his family have called Fort Collins home since 1998 where he started Tropiflora in 2007. He blends his plant care experience with a study of emerging worldwide research which demonstrates the many measurable health benefits of having plants in the home or workplace. His knowledge and expertise are unique\, valuable resources for the Northern Colorado region. \nExperience Level: Beginner-Intermediate \nClick here to register

SUMMARY:Pruning Basics for Shrubs & Small Trees
DESCRIPTION:Course Description: \nPruning basics for shrubs and small trees to improve vigor and structural strength.  The class will cover pruning basics\, tools to use and timing.  We will also discuss healthy pruning techniques and methods to maintain structural strength.  Pruning is not a one-time fix all.  It is an ongoing process continuing as plants grow and develop. \nQuestions are encouraged and participants may bring pictures of their problem plants for advice. \nPresented by Tom Throgmorton: \nTom Throgmorton has been growing plants and gardening along the Front Range for more than 25 years\, including positions at Cheyenne Botanic Gardens and Fort Collins Nursery. SUMMARY:Seeing and Thinking Like a Landscape Designer
DESCRIPTION:Course Description: \nConsidering that everything in our interior and exterior environment affects us\, it is important to pay attention to detail.  In this class you’ll learn tips for pulling all the elements of your landscape together so it looks like it was designed with the big picture in mind vs. a more random approach. \nWe will cover the importance of curb appeal and how the smallest things can affect your peace of mind and daily mood.  The concepts of harmony and balance\, the main guiding principles of Feng Shui\, will also be addressed. \nBecause most of our high impact plants are dormant six months of the year\, a four season garden is essential for a beautiful\, well rounded landscape.  We’ll look at how to use the basic elements of design throughout the year for optimal aesthetics as well as bring in other concepts that add to the magical nature of your landscape.  \nPresented by Robyn Dolgin: \nRobyn Dolgin has been a horticulturist for over 35 years\, working at nurseries\, orchards and indoor plant stores.  She started her first consulting business in 1981 and now operates Wild Iris Living\, LLC.  They create beautiful\, four season interest\, water conserving landscapes and highly productive edible gardens with design\, consultation\, pruning and maintenance services. She loves working with nature and the energy of space to create landscapes that are both aesthetically pleasing and uplifting to those who view or spend time in them.  At heart\, Robyn is an educator\, plant advocate and writer. \nRobyn is well known for her past work at the Gardens on Spring Creek and the thought-provoking Coloradoan Newspaper gardening column she wrote for several years.  Robyn initiated the innovative GardenFest garden tour as well as a Gardener’s Journal\, an insightful weekly commentary for community radio station KRFC-FM when it first took to the airwaves. Robyn’s latest passion finds her spending time in the Wild Iris Studio\, creating mixed media art pieces with found objects\, treasures of nature and handmade paper.   \nExperience Level: Beginner-Advanced \nClick here to register
