Compost: Making It & Using It
January 19, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
$18
Course Description:
Adding compost to the soil is an important component of soil management for semi-arid Colorado landscapes because soils in dry climates are usually naturally low in organic matter. We will discuss the various techniques of making compost (hot thermal, sheet composting, leaf mold, and vermicompost). We will also discuss the proper application and use of compost in the landscape.
Presented by Dr. Jean Reeder:
Dr. Reeder is a self-described “soils geek”. She worked 30 years for the USDA Agricultural Research Service as a soil scientist conducting research studies on the properties of rangeland and disturbed-land ecosystems in Colorado and Wyoming. Since retiring, she works as a consultant for the CSU Soil Testing Lab and as a soils instructor for the Colorado Master Gardener Program and the Denver Botanic Gardens’ Rocky Mountain Gardening certification program. Her passion these days is helping gardeners understand as much about their soil as they do about their plants, and how to manage soil health to achieve healthy landscapes.
